Fab Free in the New Year

Second Life

There are a some myths out there about money and Second Life. One is that it’s impossible to enjoy Second Life without spending real-life money. Another is that buying items in Second Life is stupid because it’s not real, it’s digital, or just a hobby.

When it comes to money in Second Life, there are a few things to keep in mind. First, much of the content is user-created. Second Life residents spend a lot of time and energy creating beautiful things and, if you want one of their items, they deserve to be paid. You wouldn’t step into the shoe department at Macy’s and demand those Steve Madden pumps for free and, if you’re a law-abiding citizen, you’re paying for your digital music, movies, and video games.

Second, we’re not talking a lot of money. For about the cost of a Grande Peppermint Mocha from Starbucks, you can get over a thousand lindens (Second Life currency) and that buys you quite a lot.

Third, it’s natural to spend money on the things we enjoy and get value from. People spend hundreds of dollars on video games, movies, books, music – much of it digital – scrapbrooking, jewelry-making, photography, and countless other hobbies. Second Life isn’t different.

Nevertheless, there are good reasons you may not want to spend money in Second Life. Maybe you’re new and want to discover more first or maybe times are tough and you need to save your pennies. Either way, it’s wholly possible to have a great second life and be very fashionable without spending a dime.

For this experiment, I dusted off an account I created back in June. She had never left her entry point, had not acquired anything in her Inventory, and has no money in her account. To start, I chose the Female Party Outfit and quickly set off to the Fab Free Headquarters. Everything shown below is free and out of the box. Nothing was created by me. During the month, I’ll be showing you more freebies from around the Grid.
